The TOX Boston- Scam or Good Stuff?

the tox boston

The TOX recently opened up right around Newbury Street in the Back Bay of Boston. The TOX promotes body contouring using non-invasive techniques. The goal is to give you an overall more toned appearance using the body’s natural detox systems. They use a special body sculpt method leaning on lymphatic drainage.

I’ve been to the TOX a couple of times now~ I’ve had the 90 minute face+body treatment, 60 minute body treatment and facial only treatment done. Overall, I am a fan of the TOX and always leave feeling great. I’ll break down what I like about it and more information in this post in case you give it a shot!

The Vibe

A very cool vibe in here ~ think chill, smooth music, dark everything with neon signs, polished aesthetic. You’ll be checked in and then can hang in the waiting room to browse some of their products before your specialist walks you in. All of the specialists I’ve ever had for my sessions have been fantastic.

The Procedure

Depending on what service you get, your specialist will either focus on your body, face, or both. You’ll start by getting undressed and then getting cozy underneath the blankets. The specialist will walk in and give you an affirmation of the day while you breathe in essential oils~ it is really quite lovely. Then, the session consists of a massage where they are sculpting your body and using a specific body contouring technique, and a cupping machine that locks everything in. It never really feels painful for me ~ the stomach area is where things feel more sensitive, but as long as you don’t eat a huge meal or drink a lot of water before going in, you’ll be okay. I also wouldn’t recommend going in if you are on your period or are having cramping of any kind. The facial feels amazing ~ they use gua sha and facial cups to sculpt. I try to do this at home sometimes, but it never feels as incredible as having someone do it for you! Below are some before and after photos of my stomach after doing the body treatment.

Before and After Photos

Lymphatic Drainage

The TOX folks are experts in lymphatic drainage. They essentially are helping open up these lymphatic passage ways so that stagnant lymph can drain more easily. Last time I went, I got these lymphatic patches that I stuck onto my body at night, and I’m even using some while I’m traveling to encourage the drainage!

Do note that there are several ways you can open up your lymphatic system at home and encourage drainage. Dry brushing, body gua sha, facial gua sha and even massage with your hands are all great examples. Resources:

Pros and Cons

Pros:

*This method is not invasive ~ no surgery or shots that could cause issues

*I’m always very cozy during the procedure and the technicians are incredible

*I love the results right after and a few days following. It also encourages healthy habits like eating healthy, drinking a lot of water, avoiding alcohol etc because I want my sculpted look to last

Cons:

*It is very expensive. For example, the 60 minute procedure is more than 200 dollars

*They often encourage you to buy ‘packs’ for a special deal, which is fine, but if I’m talked into this it is obviously another couple of hundred dollars. Overall, this is NOT cheap and for myself, I can only commit to going 3-5 times a year realistically

*Might be some pain and discomfort during the suction part. I sometimes have some redness and a bit of swelling afterwards, but nothing too bad

Conclusion

Overall, if you are looking for a unique way to treat yourself, reduce puffiness, get that toned and sculpted look like you did 100 crunches when really all you did was lie in a cozy bed and get yourself treated, the TOX session may be for you! I love doing this after a trip or a few days of not eating that great to reset my body and mind. It helps me be more consistent with my healthy routines afterward because it is expensive and I want the results to last. If you are open to a nice “self-care” day, it could be worth throwing in. Let me know if you do try it out! Remember that there are less costly methods for lymphatic drainage at home. I plan to do a whole separate post on lymphatic drainage and working with this system, but the resources I listed are a great place to start if you are new.
