What does Pursuing a Pilates Mat Certification Actually Look Like?

My Journey to Pilates Mat Certification: A Reflective Experience

I recently completed my Pilates Mat Certification through Kink Pilates and Master Trainer Jill Rothenberg of Movement with Jill, and it has been an incredible, challenging, and rewarding experience! Over two weekends in March, I dove deep into the principles of Pilates, learned about its classical movements, and acquired the tools necessary to teach others the benefits of this timeless practice.

But what does it really take to earn a Pilates certification? Let me share my journey—what I learned, the challenges I faced, and the surprising insights that came along the way.

The Structure of the Training

The training consisted of 40 hours of classroom instruction, spread across two full weekends—Saturday and Sunday. As intense as it was, I couldn’t have asked for a more supportive and knowledgeable environment. We used a comprehensive manual throughout the course, which included information on Pilates principles and an in-depth exploration of the Tier 1 through 5 movements.

Each day, we reviewed the purpose of each movement, the muscles targeted, and the proper cues to ensure safe and effective execution. The hands-on approach was invaluable. We didn’t just discuss theory; we practiced movements on each other, setting up each position, adjusting form, and ensuring we understood the nuances of each exercise.

There were certain exercises I felt comfortable with, like Ab Curl for example. However, some of the new moves like Hip Twist, Full Teaser, and Swan were certainly new to me and quite challenging. With that said, Jill was fantastic in helping us build up the exercise into a Sequence, rather than just diving into it all at once. This is also a wonderful way to cue students into a more difficult, progressive posture, because even if they cannot get to the full expression, the earlier forms of the exercise will still give a beautiful workout and get the same muscles!

For example Tier 2 Swan is a lift of the forehead, shoulders and neck as such:

While Tier 5 Swan includes a full extension of the head, chest and shoulders off the mat, and then a lift of the legs as well, creating a See-Saw effect.

It is not about trying to get to the highest level for every exercise and making it as hard as possible. In fact, it is quite the opposite. It is about recognizing the purpose of the exercise, safely getting into it, and how to cue someone properly into that exercise so that him/her can experience the benefits.

Classroom Experience

One of the highlights was the opportunity to take a class and experience how the movements felt in our own bodies. This gave me a much clearer understanding of what clients may feel when performing the exercises. We also had the chance to offer feedback and discuss any discomfort or difficulty, which helped us refine our teaching technique.

Throughout the training, we dedicated time to posture clinics, focusing on correcting common mistakes and ensuring proper alignment and body mechanics. This was incredibly valuable, as teaching posture and alignment is one of the cornerstones of a good Pilates practice.

The last day was spent fully practice teaching. We each were assigned a part and round-robined for each section. I was intimidated and nervous, but I did my best to apply what I had learned so far and speak confidently, knowing that I would get valuable feedback at the end no matter what- and I did! We were then paired off into groups where each of us were responsible for putting together a full Pilates class. Jill assigned us sections of our class in a format where we didn’t know what we would get ahead of time, which definitely added to the nerves, but I appreciated this because at the end of the day, each of us are responsible for the entire Pilates class and teaching it correctly; we can’t just pick the part we like best. While some of us taught, others took the class. It was such a rewarding experience to have this flow and I couldn’t believe how much all of us had learned after a short time!

Anatomy and Beyond

In addition to the physical practice, we spent time discussing anatomy, which helped to further understand how Pilates movements affect the body. We were also given access to a full anatomy course through Pilates International Academy, which was an essential component of the certification process. As part of the program, I learned not just about anatomy but also about the history of Pilates and the reasoning behind each of its movements.

What I Wish I Knew Before Starting

While I thoroughly enjoyed the experience, there are a few things I wish I had known going in. First off, these are long days! The weekends were packed with information, movement, and practice, which was fantastic but exhausting. So, my advice? Bring extra water and snacks to stay fueled and energized! In other words don’t live off caffeine and matcha lattes like I did 😉 To be fair, there was a gorgeous Laikon Paris right next to the Kink Pilates place, and dang, they make good lattes.

Anyways, something that is crucial to emphasize is that the Pilates Cert is not just completed in two weekends. In other words, you won’t get your gold badge confirming you are officially Pilates Certified in that time. It’s a commitment that involves a lot more than just showing up for the training. To officially become certified, you need to log observation hours, personal practice hours, and teaching hours. There are also additional practical exams to complete—one where you demonstrate your ability to instruct, and another where you must successfully execute a teaching session with a client. The timeline for completing these requirements is flexible, but it’s important to be aware that it can take longer than you might expect.

Jill Rothenberg: A Truly Inspiring Master Trainer

One of the things that made this experience so special was the guidance and mentorship from Jill Rothenberg. Jill’s approach to teaching is incredibly inclusive and encouraging, which created an environment where everyone felt comfortable and empowered to learn. It’s obvious that Jill is deeply passionate about practicing Pilates safely and creating excellent instructors. She emphasized the importance of form, alignment, and mindful movement throughout the course, ensuring that we understood not just how to teach, but why each movement matters.

What I truly appreciate about Jill is that she offered herself as an ongoing resource many times throughout the training. She made it clear that we could reach out with questions or for support as we continued our Pilates journeys. That kind of mentorship is invaluable, and I’m excited to continue taking her classes and observing her teaching style as I deepen my own practice.

And on top of her professionalism and expertise, Jill made the long days fun and light-hearted. She brought humor and warmth to the classroom, making the challenging days feel more manageable. Her humor and energy were exactly what we needed to stay engaged during those marathon weekends. That level of enthusiasm was not only appreciated but contagious—it made the whole experience even more enjoyable.

Staying Organized

To stay organized and ensure everything is logged, I have created a folder on my Google Drive and I think this could be helpful if you are more type “A” like me, and want to ensure everything is logged! I am storing my notes and resources from training in here + the manuals in addition to my time logs. For my observation, personal practice and teaching hours, I am logging the time, date, location and title of the class. This will help me keep track of my progress and ensure I am holding myself accountable.

The Takeaway

Despite the demands of the certification process, the training was well worth the effort. It was incredibly fulfilling to learn the classical Pilates movements, understand the reasoning behind each one, and gain confidence in my ability to teach others. The knowledge I gained about Pilates, both in terms of history and practice, has deepened my respect for the method and its benefits.

In the end, this journey has not only given me a certification but also a deeper appreciation for the art of teaching Pilates and the positive impact it can have on people’s bodies and lives. I’m excited to continue on this path, improve my practice, and share my newfound knowledge with others.

At the end of the day, this certification journey wasn’t just about earning a title—it was about deepening my connection to Pilates and learning how to share this life-changing practice with others. If you’re thinking about pursuing your own Pilates certification, I encourage you to take the leap. It will be challenging, but the rewards far outweigh the effort. Whether you’re teaching or practicing for your own well-being, Pilates offers something transformative for everyone.
